The 6 God fueled excitement for his upcoming project on Monday (August 21) by giving his Instagram followers a first look at the artwork, which features a drawing of a dog done by his five-year-old son.
Set in front of a black background, the cartoon canine has a white fur coat and glowing red eyes, setting a menacing tone for Drizzy’s latest offering.
“FOR ALL THE DOGS,” the Toronto native wrote in the caption. “Cover by Adonis.”
The unorthodox cover certainly caught the eye of his followers, with fans and peers alike flooding his comments section with their reactions.
While the album cover carries obvious sentimental value for Drake, it sits in stark contrast to the majority of his catalog. Back in 2021, he commissioned famed British artist Damien Hirst to design the cover for his sixth album Certified Lover Boy, which was graced by a series of pregnant women emojis.
2013’s Nothing Was the Same was a similarly prestigious affair as the artwork — which depicted a current-day Drake standing opposite a younger version of himself in front of a blue, cloud-dotted sky — was painted by Kadir Nelson, the artist behind Michael Jackson’sMichael.
However, the For All the Dogs cover does share similarities with that of If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which featured the title scrawled in chicken scratch in front of a blank white background. Whether this new project captures the same “mixtape” spirit as Drizzy’s 2015 effort remains to be seen.
For All the Dogs was first announced by Drake back in June, coinciding with the news of his debut poetry book Titles Ruin Everything: A Stream of Consciousness.
Since then, the Her Loss hitmaker has been utilizing his It’s All a Blur Tour with 21 Savage to promote the album, giving fans teasers and updates during shows and even wearing dog masks on the way to arenas.
During his opening night in Chicago last month, he hinted that For All the Dogs will satisfy those yearning for “the old Drake.”
“I look around at all these faces. I know it’s summertime, I gotta give you shit!” he told the crowd. “I don’t know about these guys that go away for three, four, five years and wanna chill out and all that shit. That’s not me.
“With that being said, I got an album coming out soon for y’all. It’s called For All the Dogs. I always hear people talking about, ‘Damn, we miss that old Drake.’”
He continued: “I understand what you mean. You need more music so that you can, you know, feel good about your new lover, shit on your exes, get fly, get drunk, show love to your family, show love to your friends.”
Nostalgia will be present in at least one collaboration on the project, with Drake confirming that his old pal Nicki Minaj will make an appearance.
While a release date has yet to be announced, Drizzy promised fans during a show in Inglewood, California earlier this month that For All the Dogs is “coming real soon.”
“I kinda got a chance today to listen to my album in full. I’m very excited to give it to you. I hope you’re excited for it too,” he said. “It’s coming real soon. It’ll belong to you very shortly.”
If it does indeed arrive by the end of August, For All the Dogs will mark Drake’s fourth full-length release in a two-year span following Certified Lover Boy, Honestly, Nevermind and Her Loss with 21 Savage — cementing this as the most prolific run of his career.
