Thanos decimated the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Using the combined power of the six Infinity Stones, the Mad Titan snapped his finger and obliterated half of all life in the known universe–leaving the Avengers powerless to stop his massive crusade.
While the Avengers tried and failed to stop Thanos, there were plenty of other beings in the universe who had the power to defeat the Mad Titan once and for all. From powerful mythological gods to entire teams of superheroes, there were plenty of MCU characters who simply stood by as Thanos killed trillions.
9 The Eternals
The Eternals are a group of powerful immortal beings, each with their own superpower. Consisting of ten individuals, including Ikaris, Sersi, Pixie, Kingo, Phastos, Thena, Gilgamesh, Makkari, Druig, and Ajak, the Eternals are some of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have been on Earth for thousands of years.
Despite being well aware of what was going on at the time, the Eternals stood by as Thanos defeated the MCU’s heroes. Although the Eternals had vowed never to interfere in the affairs of men unless Deviants were involved, it should be noted that Thanos traditionally is detected as a Deviant, making this excuse invalid.
8 Starfox
Eros, a.k.a. Starfox, was introduced during the mid-credits scene of Eternals but, like the other characters in the film, is implied to have been active in the MCU long before the events depicted therein. Alongside his friend, Pip the Troll, Starfox claims to be a great galavanting galactic hero but was nowhere to be found during Infinity War.
Starfox’s absence from Earth during Thanos’s crusade is especially surprising when it is revealed that he is the Mad Titan’s brother. Pip confirms this relationship during his long preamble, introducing him as the brother of Thanos. Clearly, Starfox hasn’t been keeping up with his brother’s activities.
7 Gorr The God Butcher
Gorr the God Butcher is a malevolent entity who acts as the main antagonist in Thor: Love and Thunder. Wielding the power of the Necrosword, Gorr travels from place to place on an endless mission to slay every god from every pantheon in the universe–refusing to rest until all gods are dead.
While it is unclear when exactly Gorr came into possession of the Necrosword, it seems likely that he was active prior to Thanos’s crusade. Since Thanos does have some connections to the gods, it would have made sense for Gorr to go after the Mad Titan at some point. Despite the Necrosword almost certainly being capable of killing Thanos, Gorr never joins in the battle.
6 Zeus
Marvel’s Zeus is based on the mythological god from Greek mythology, who rules over the other gods of Olympus. The MCU’s Zeus also happens to be the ruler of Omnipotent City, which includes many gods from every pantheon in the universe. Despite this massive seat of unlimited power, none of these gods–with the exception of Thor–actually participated in the battle against Thanos.
Zeus’s apathy toward anything going on outside of Omnipotent City serves as a very likely explanation for why the gods sat idly by as Thanos destroyed half of the universe’s population. However, it stands to reason that the gods would have been affected by the snap as well, making it strange that they didn’t lend their mighty power to the Avengers.
5 Namor
Namor the Sub-Mariner is the leader of the underwater nation of Talokan. The mutant is hundreds of years old and has honed his abilities to become one of the most powerful individuals on the planet. Despite being well-aware of the Wakandans by the events of Infinity War, Namor and his armies never arrived during the Battle of Wakanda.
While Namor wouldn’t have cared had Thanos wiped out the entire surface world, the Decimation certainly affected his kingdom just as much. This makes it odd that Namor never emerged during or immediately after Thanos’s snap.
4 Agatha Harkness
Agatha Harkness is one of the MCU’s best Disney+ villains, first appearing in WandaVision and later in her own spinoff, Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Agatha is a witch who seeks to steal other magical beings’ powers for herself. Present in the MCU since the Salem Witch Trials, Agatha was very much active during the timeline of Infinity War–yet was nowhere to be found.
Although Agatha isn’t necessarily on the side of good, it would be hard to believe that she would endorse Thanos’s bloody crusade. The loss of half of the universe’s population would leave Agatha with less magic to absorb from others, setting her firmly against Thanos’s plan from the beginning. Even so, the witch never stepped in to intervene on behalf of humanity.
3 The High Evolutionary
The High Evolutionary quickly proved himself to be one of the most evil villains in the MCU during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Obsessed with creating the perfect species, the High Evolutionary has created several characters and races in the MCU, including Rocket Raccoon.
Thanos’s crusade would have interfered with the High Evolutionary’s experiments, presumably wiping out half of his test subjects. Despite his great ego–and the multiple armies at his fingertips, the High Evolutionary never retaliated against Thanos, nor did he ever seek the Infinity Gauntlet for himself–despite all the horrors he could have unleashed with such a weapon.
2 The Mandarin
The Mandarin, a.k.a. Xu Wenwu, was the villainous leader of the Ten Rings organization, as seen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Having used the Ten Rings’ power to stay alive for centuries, the Mandarin built up quite an empire for himself, which would have been immensely useful in the fight against Thanos.
Using his incredible mastery over the Ten Rings and his command over entire armies of criminals, the Mandarin would have been a key ally in the fight against Thanos. Nevertheless, Wenwu remained neutral in this fight, never stepping in to aid either the Avengers or the Mad Titan, leaving audiences to wonder what he was up to during the events of Infinity War.
1 The Ennead
The Ennead is a group made up of several Egyptian gods, each of whom embodies a human avatar. Moon Knight introduces Horus, Hathor, Isis, Osiris, and Tefnut as the main members of the Ennead, with other gods like Khonshu, Ammit, and Tawaret all playing supporting roles in the dealings of the Egyptian deities.
As mighty as this council of Egyptian gods was, not a single one of them stepped in to stop Thanos. They swore to protect Earth as much as they could, but never even attempted to defeat the very Titan who vowed to kill half of the planet’s population. When Arthur Harrow and Ammit killed the members of the Ennead, the Earth clearly didn’t lose its best defenders.
