On Saturday, the actor Ron Cephas Jones’s representative confirmed to PEOPLE that the beloved and acclaimed actor had passed away at 66 due to a prolonged lung problem.

The statement highlighted that as he went through his career, people who were lucky to know him experienced his friendly, caring, lovely, and giving personality.

It was at Nuyorican Poets Cafe that Ron kicked off his career, and his passion for performing on stage remained unwavering throughout his entire journey. His dedication to work earned him a Tony Award nomination and secured a Drama Desk Award for his role in Clyde’s on Broadway.

Ron Cephas Jones was battling a critical pulmonary disease

In 2021, the “Law & Order: Organized Crime” actor revealed to The New York Times that he had been dealing with a long-standing condition called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. To address this, he had surgery in 2020, where he got a double lung transplant. The surgery took place at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and he spent two months recovering.

In June 2020 interview with Today, Roy mentioned that his performance in Clyde’s on Broadway, which was nominated for a Tony Award, motivated him to recover quickly.

In May 2020, Roy remembered sharing with Entertainment Weekly how his fellow actors and producers were there for him when he faced a serious health crisis on the day he wrapped up filming. 

Ron Cephas Jones’s early life

Ron Cephas Jones was born on January 8, 1957, in Paterson, New Jersey. He went on to John. F Kennedy High School and later graduated from Ramapo College. While at Ramapo, he initially planned to study jazz with director Arnold Jones, but he switched to theater after getting the main role in a production of Cinderella Ever After during his second year.

After finishing his studies at Ramapo in 1978, Jones went to Los Angeles, California. There, he worked as a bus driver for the Southern California Rapid Transit District for about four years.

During that period, he experienced a lot- he fell in love, became a parent, and then went through a separation. After that, he wandered around, living in different places like San Francisco, Arizona, and New Orleans. Eventually, he went back to New York City in 1985.

After returning to New York in 1985, Jones began spending time at the Nuyorican Poets Café located in the East Village of Manhattan. During his time there, he participated in a play that drew inspiration from the Billie Holiday song “Don’t Explain.”

This caught the attention of a casting director. After this, Jones was offered the leading role in a play named Holiday Heart, which was written by Cheryl West and directed by Tazewell Thompson.

Jones was a part of various television shows like Mr. Robot, The Get Down, Luke Cage, and Truth Be Told. He was also in several movies like Half Nelson, Across the Universe, Glass Chin, The Holiday Calendar, Dog Days, and Dolmite Is My Name.
